A holiday message from Zwarte Tulp

Er is dit jaar veel misgegaan. Oorlog, ziekte, crisis na crisis voltrekt zich. Dit gebeurt allemaal bovenop de reeds bestaande systemen van onderdrukking voordat deze crises aan de oppervlakte kwamen.

Vaak hebben we de neiging om in negatieve denkpatronen te vervallen en te kijken naar de dingen die we nog moeten doen, dingen die fout zijn gegaan of dingen die we wilden doen maar nooit hebben gedaan. Dit zijn allemaal redelijke dingen om je zorgen over te maken.

Maar we wilden 2022 positief afsluiten en terugkijken op wat we dit jaar bereikt hebben. Terugkijken op wat we deden, wat goed ging.
Door onze acties vonden enkele gevederde vrienden hun vrijheid buiten hun gevangenis. We hebben erover gepraat en vroegen ons af wat de vogels tegen ons zouden zeggen als ze ons konden vinden en met ons konden praten. We zullen het nooit weten. We zullen erop moeten vertrouwen dat ze hun hervonden vrijheid waarderen. We wensen ze het beste in deze vreemde wereld die we thuis noemen.

Door ons toedoen is het Lucas van Leyden fonds opgehouden te bestaan. Kort voordat we dit schreven, kondigden ze aan te zullen stoppen vanwege het feit dat “de openbare ruimte weerbarstig is” en andere redenen die wijzen op vandalisme. Tegelijkertijd kondigde de gemeente Leiden aan een nieuw kunstfonds te starten dat zich meer zal richten op lokale kunst en kunstenaars. Dit lijkt allemaal in overeenstemming te zijn met onze kritiek die we uitten in onze verklaring met betrekking tot de vernieling van “to breathe”. We willen hiervoor niet de volledige verantwoordelijkheid opeisen. Het Lucas van Leyden fonds stuit sinds de oprichting in 2019 op veel weerstand. Van algemene, legaal geuite kritiek tot meer clandestiene acties van ,voor ons bekende en onbekende, kameraden. Deze strijd is al jaren aan de gang, maar het lijkt erop dat we de laatste trap hebben gegeven. We zullen dit nieuwe kunstfonds in de gaten houden en zien waar het heen gaat.

Daarbovenop zijn de lampen die we uitzetten bij de Oude Vest nog steeds niet gerepareerd. Dat betekent volgens onze berekeningen al dat we de belastingbetaler in twee weken tijd tussen de € 133 en € 231 hebben bespaard. In tegenstelling tot wat het Lucas van Leyden fonds in hun verklaringen schreef, verbruiken deze LED-lampen minimaal 3680W en zijn dus wel erg stroomintensief. Vanaf januari 2023 besparen we de belastingbetaler tussen de € 532 en € 924 per maand, volgens de nieuwe energieprijzen.

Ook kregen we wat berichtjes van mensen die aan de Oude Vest en Oude Singel wonen die ons bedankten voor het uitdoen van de lichten. Ze wezen ons erop dat deze lichten heel gevaarlijk waren omdat ze mensen in het verkeer verblindden toen ze het kruispunt naderden. We realiseerden ons dit niet eens, maar we zijn erg blij dat de gemeenschap daar positief reageert op onze aanwezigheid 🙂
We willen alle teams van Zwarte Tulp bedanken voor het meedoen aan acties. We willen al onze kameraden bedanken voor hun mond te houden tegen de politie. We willen iedereen bedanken die contact met ons heeft opgenomen, om welke reden dan ook. We willen iedereen bedanken die onze acties via internet, sociale media of mond-op-mondreclame heeft gedeeld.

We gaan de komende tijd wat tijd doorbrengen met onze dierbaren en families. Maar u kunt erop rekenen dat we deze strijd in 2023 voortzetten.

A lot this year has gone wrong. War, disease, crisis after crisis is unfolding. All of this happens on top of the already existing systems of oppression before these crises surfaced.

Often times we tend to fall into negative thought patterns and look at the things we still have to do, things that went wrong or things we wanted to do but never did. These are all reasonable things to worry about.

But we wanted to end 2022 on a positive note and look back on what we accomplished this year. Look back on what we did do, what did go right.
Because of our actions, a few featherly friends found their freedom outside of their prison. We talked about it and wondered what the birds would say to us if they could find us and speak to us. We will never know. We’ll have to trust that they appreciate their newfound freedom. We wish them well in this strange world we call home.

Because of our actions, the Lucas van Leyden fund has stopped existing. Shortly before writing this, they announced they’ll be quitting because of “the public space being unruly” amongst other reasons that point to vandalism. At the same time, the municipality of Leiden announced they’ll be starting a new art-fund that will focus more on local art and artists. This all seems to be in line with our critique we voiced in our statement regaring the vandalisation of “to breathe”. We don’t want to claim full responsibility for this. The Lucas van Leyden fund has faced a lot of resistance since it’s birth in 2019. From general, legally voiced critique to more clandestine actions from comrades, known and unknown to us. This fight has been going on for years but it seems we have struck the final blow. We will keep our eye out for this new art-fund, and see where this goes.

On top of that, the lights we disabled at Oude Vest have still not been repaired. According to our calculations this already means we saved the taxpayer between €133 and €231 in two weeks. In contrast to what the Lucas van Leyden fund wrote in their statements, these LED-lights do use 3680W at the least and are thus very power-intensive. As of January 2023 we’ll be saving the taxpayer between €532 and €924 per month, acording to the new energy prices.

We also received some messages from people living on Oude Vest and Oude Singel thanking us for turning off the lights. They pointed out to us that these lights were actually very dangerous since they were blinding people in traffic as they approached the crossroads. We did not even realize this but we are very happy that the community there is reacting positively to our presence :).

We want to thank all of the Zwarte Tulp teams for participating in actions. We want to thank all our comrades for keeping their mouth shut to the cops. We want to thank everyone who reached out to us, for whatever reason this may have been. We want to thank everyone who shared our actions on the internet, social media or mouth-to-mouth.

We are going to be spending some time with our loved ones and families in the coming time. But you can count on us to continue this fight in 2023.

Statement over het uitschakelen van “To Breathe” — Statement about turning off “To Breathe”

Aan de gemeente en het Lucas van Leyden Fonds,

We leven in tijden van crisis. Er is oorlog in Europa. Er is oorlog in het Midden-Oosten. De corona-pandemie heeft laten zien dat onze maatschappij niet bestand is tegen pandemieen en de nasleep ervan wordt nogsteeds gevoeld. Er is een huisvestings-crisis. We hebben een energiecrisis.
Nu gaan deze problemen jullie, als relatief kleine publieke instanties, iets te boven. Maar er is iets gebeurd wat op zijn minst deze laatste crisis net iets erger maakt dan het hoeft te zijn.

Jullie hebben er namelijk voor gekozen om het kunstwerk “to breathe” te plaatsen over de Oude Vest in Leiden.
Dit is niet alleen een grote middelvinger naar alle kunstenaars actief in Leiden. In plaats van dat Leids belastinggeld wordt uitgegeven aan Leidse kunstenaars, wordt het uitgegeven aan een bourgeois kunstenares met kantoren in New York, Seoul en Parijs, die zogenaamd weet wat er gaande is in Leiden en hoe de Leidse identiteit in elkaar steekt.
Het is ook een grote middelvinger naar de gewone burger, lokale bedrijven en in het bijzonder studenten. Iedereen kampt met problemen rondom elektriciteit en verwarming. Er is een prijsplafond aangekondigd, de Haarlemmerstraat heeft dichte winkeldeuren om energie te besparen, huishoudens besparen energie op elke mogelijke manier en studenten moeten het maar zelf fixen want zij hebben geen recht op de energie-toeslag.

Andere gemeenten kiezen ervoor het goede voorbeeld te geven, door bijvoorbeeld onnodige straatverlichting ‘s nachts uit te zetten. En wat doet Leiden?
Leiden geeft Leids belastinggeld aan een internationale bourgeois kunstenares die dat niet gaat herinvesteren in de Leidse economie. Vervolgens wordt dit kunstwerk elke nacht nodeloos verlicht met energie-slurpende lampen. Waarom moet de gewone burger besparen en mag de gemeente belastinggeld uitgeven voor hun status-projectjes?

We leven in crisis. Niet alleen de burger. Als de burgers in crisis leven, zal de overheid hetzelfde moeten doen. Het geld dat de lampen kosten hadden ook aan de energie-toeslag van studenten gegeven kunnen worden. Hieruit blijkt dat jullie prioriteiten ergens anders liggen.
Dat is waarom wij de lampen hebben afgesloten. Wij vinden het ontoelaatbaar dat de gewone burger lijdt terwijl corrupte bureaucraten pronken met hun nodeloze, inspiratieloze, geïmporteerde, overlastgevende kunst.

To the municipality and the Lucas van Leyden Fund,

We live in times of crisis. There is war in Europe. There is war in the Middle East. The corona pandemic has shown that our society cannot withstand pandemics and its aftermath is still being felt. There is a housing crisis. We have an energy crisis.
Now these problems are somewhat beyond you, as relatively small public entities, but something has happened that at least makes this latest crisis a little bit worse than it needs to be.

You have chosen to place the artwork “to breathe” over the Oude Vest in Leiden.
This is not just a big middle finger to all artists active in Leiden. Instead of tax money being spent on Leiden-based artists, it is being spent on a bourgeois artist with offices in New York, Seoul and Paris, who supposedly knows what is going on in Leiden and what people in Leiden identify with.
It is also a big middle finger to ordinary citizens, local businesses and especially students. Everyone has problems with electricity and heating. A price ceiling has been announced, Haarlemmerstraat-businesses have closed shop doors to save energy, households save energy in every possible way and students have to fix it themselves because they are not entitled to the energy-benefits.
Other municipalities choose to set a good example, for example by turning off unnecessary street lighting at night. And what does Leiden do?
Leiden gives Leiden tax money to an international bourgeois artist who will not reinvest it in the local economy. Subsequently, this work of art is unnecessarily illuminated every night with energy-guzzling lamps. Why should ordinary citizens save on their energy and should the municipality be allowed to spend tax money on energy for their status projects?

We live in crisis. Not just the citizen. If the citizens live in crisis, the government will have to do the same. The money that the lamps cost in energy could also have been given to the energy allowance of students. This shows that your priorities lie elsewhere.
That’s why we shut off the lamps. We find it intolerable that the commoner suffers while corrupt bureaucrats flaunt their useless, uninspired, imported, nuisance-inducing art.

Statement over het Pesthuis/”Oranjehuis” — Statement about the Pesthuis/”Oranjehuis”

Vrijdagnacht hebben activisten van De Zwarte Tulp de toegangsdeur van het “Oranjehuis” dichtgelijmd. Hieronder volgt een statement naar aanleiding van deze actie.

In het Pesthuis, dat ter ere van het WK voetbal in Qatar is hernoemd naar het “Oranjehuis”, worden evenementen georganiseerd waar WK wedstrijden worden bekeken. Tijdens de voorbereidingen van dit WK zijn 6500 mensen gestorven, en nog duizenden meer hebben jarenlang gedwongen onder onmenselijke omstandigheden moeten werken. Dit is allemaal het gevolg van de keuzes van de corrupte bestuursleden van de FIFA. Iedereen die naar de voetbalwedstrijden van dit WK kijkt, geeft aan wel achter deze keuzes van de FIFA te staan. Wij vinden dat onacceptabel, en het organiseren van evenementen waar deze voetbalwedstrijden worden bekeken slaat natuurlijk helemaal nergens op. Gelukkig zijn de organisatoren van het “Oranjehuis” zich wel bewust van het leed dat zich afspeelt in Qatar, want ze delen een petitie op hun website die oproept om de uitgebuite arbeiders in Qatar te compenseren. Dit slaat natuurlijk helemaal nergens op, want je kan overleden arbeiders niet compenseren.

Daar komt bij dat het Pesthuis, voordat het werd opgekocht door projectontwikkelaar CityStone, een museum was en dus een maatschappelijke functie had. De gemeente Leiden had aan omwonenden beloofd dat deze maatschappelijke functie behouden zou blijven. In plaats daarvan werd het Pesthuis en het omliggende gebied een horeca terrein, en zijn er hotels en short-stay appartementen. Ook zijn er al twee bewoners uitgezet. De gemeente laat dit allemaal toe.

Ook hebben wij CityStone en het Oranjehuis een e-mail gestuurd met daarin de eis dat de verwerpelijke evenementen die in het “Oranjehuis” georganiseerd worden per direct gestaakt worden. Hier is geen gehoor aan gegeven. Het evenement waar de wedstrijd Nederland-Verenigde Staten werd bekeken is immers gewoon doorgegaan. Wij eisen dat de organisatoren wel de bingo die nog op de planning staat voor 8 december afgelasten, en geen evenement organiseren voor het kijken van de volgende wedstrijd van het Nederlands elftal. Daarbovenop eisen wij dat alle commerciele activiteiten in het Pesthuis gestaakt worden en het weer de maatschappelijke functie krijgt die de omwonenen beloofd is.

Activists from De Zwarte Tulp have glued the entrance to the “Oranjehuis” shut. A statement about this action follows below.

Events where matches from the football world cup in Qatar are watched are organized in the Pesthuis, which has been renamed to “Oranjehuis” for the occasion. During the preparation for the world cup, 6500 people have died in Qatar, and many thousands more were forced to work in inhumane conditions for years. This is all caused by choices from the corrupt board of directors of the FIFA. Everyone who watches the world cup, shows they support these choices. We find that unacceptable, and organizing events where these world cup matches are watched is of course even worse. Fortunately, the organizers are aware of the situation in Qatar, because they shared a petition on their website that calls for the compensation of workers in Qatar who were taken advantage of. This will not help at all, as it is impossible to compensate dead workers.

On top of that, the Pesthuis, before it was bought by developer CityStone, used to have a social function. The municipality of Leiden promised the neighborhood that this social function would persist after the building was sold, but this is not what happened. Instead, the Pesthuis and surrounding area became an event area, and there are now also hotels and short-stay apartments. Two of the neighbors have also been evicted. The municipality just allows this to happen.
We have also sent an email to CityStone and the “Oranjehuis” to demand that the repulsive events that are organized in the “Oranjehuis” are immediately cancelled. So far, this demand has not been met.

The “Oranjehuis”  is currently planning to host a bingo night on 8 December, and an event where the next match of the Dutch team will be watched on the 9th. We demand that these two events are cancelled.  On top of that we demand that all commercial activities in the Pesthuis are ceased and that Pesthuis will return to its social function that was promised to the neighbors.
